SH1, the Desert Road, has just re-opened after a two car crash which injured eight people.
Two cars collided about 3pm, 5 kilometres north of the Tree Trunk Gorge Road intersection.
Helicopters and ambulances have taken the injured to Waikato, Rotorua and Taupo hospitals.
Traffic in the central North Island was diverted through National Park for almost six hours.
