UPDATED 9.30PM

The search for a swimmer missing in Lake Karapiro has been suspended for the night.

Police were contacted about the missing man just after 3.30pm this afternoon. The 21-year-old was last seen swimming near Waipa Reserve, south of Cambridge, when he failed to resurface.

A search of the lake area near Waipuke Reserve involving police, the Harbour Master boats and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter found no sign of the man.

The search will resume in the morning.
