A break in the weather means the search is underway for a 52-year-old man missing on Mt Cook.

Steve Dowall hasn't been seen since Thursday, when he failed to meet up with his friend at the Empress Hut.

Efforts to find him yesterday were called off because of bad weather.

Mid south Canterbury police area commander Dave Gaskin said it's fine and clear today.

"It's pretty cold from what I understand there has been quite a lot of snow up there, there's quite a bit of avalanche debris lying around the area so they're having a poke around at the moment."

Steve Dowall's wife Sovann Dowall said she misses and needs her husband, and said she wonders what she can do without him.

The couple have three children and are a month from celebrating their 26th wedding anniversary.

They live in Burma where Steve Dowall works for the United Nations, but return to New Zealand each year so he can climb the mountain.
