The grounds of Parliament are being treated as a crime scene after a man set himself on fire there.
The man, who's believed to be a regular protestor, has been rushed to Wellington Hospital with critical burns.
Senior Sergeant Glen Turner spoke to media outside Parliament this afternoon, and said police are yet to identity the man, who had been extinguished when they arrived.
He said the grounds are cordoned off as they investigate what happened.
"Police were called to a man on fire. Police are appealing to members of the public for witnesses and people that may have assisted."
Â
It is understood the man involved was known to security.Â
A Wellington Free Ambulance spokesperson said they received multiple calls at 3.50pm, when the incident took place.
Cordons have been put in place, and police are blocking all entrances to Parliament grounds.
