UPDATED 3.28PM: A woman who had a knife held to her neck while shopping in Paihia is shaken, but unharmed.

A 40-year-old man is now in police custody, after he allegedly took the woman hostage while in a Four Square supermarket this morning, forcing other customers and the shop owner to leave.

The police station was only two doors down, so officers were soon on the scene.

They entered the shop and spoke with the man, who eventually put down the knife and surrendered.

Far North Area Commander Inspector Wendy Robilliard says the fast response from both the public and officers on the scene led to the speedy resolution, and no further injuries.
