Parents, students, and staff are rallying around the family of a young boy found critically injured at school.

The nine-year old is now in Starship Hospital after being found in the grounds of Taradale Primary School in Napier with breathing difficulties at 1.15 yesterday afternoon.

He is now in a critical condition. Police said the injuries were the result of an accident and are continuing their investigations.

A mother whose daughter witnessed the incident was shocked to find out it was a close friend in her daughter's class.

"It was pretty scary...everybody's sort of going 'What's happened? What's happened?' and nobody really knew what was happening," she said. "It was a bit of shock really."

Support services are in place today, and students will be helped to cope with what happened. The mother said the school community was feeling for the boy's family.

"They're doing something for the entire school just to make sure that everyone's going to be OK and all the kids are going to get through this OK," she said.

"It must be a horrible time to be going through right now. I can't even imagine."
