More than 4000 people have no power in Wellington as an electrical storm lights up the skies.

Wellington Electricity says the outage is affecting homes in Newlands, Johnsonville and Paparangi.

Customers can expect to have it back on by late morning.

A stretch of State Highway Two is in the dark with street lights affected by the outage.

Police say the lights aren't working between Ngauranga Gorge and Petone.

The traffic lights at the Ngauranga Interchange aren't working either.

Newlands BP site manager Chris Gunn says he can't see anywhere around him.

"Coming in on the freeway there I could see there was no power, get to work and there's definitely no power, so as a result we're unable to open."

MetService has a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in place for the whole West Coast of the North Island.

It says thunderstorms could become severe, producing localised damaging tornadoes and downpours leading to flash flooding.

Both tornadoes and downpours can also make driving conditions hazardous.
