A man is fighting for his life in Wellington Hospital after an incident in the driveway of a Napier motel.

The 38-year-old Napier man and an associate were walking on the driveway of Tamatea Motor Inn in Napier just before 2am on Sunday, police say.

The injured man has head injuries after a fall and police are investigating how these occurred.

A member of the public called for an ambulance.

The man is in a critical condition in Wellington Hospital after being flown there on this morning.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area at the time who may have seen the victim or his associate to come forward.

A vehicle may have stopped near the pair in the driveway just before 2am.
