UPDATED 2.47PM: The Independent Police Conduct Authority is investigating an event in south Auckland where a man is believed to have been shot by police.

The 42 year old was already wanted by authorities for failing to appear in court.

Police say the man fled to a Manurewa address where he hid under a building, then pulled out a firearm.

Shots were fired by both police and the man.

Two hours worth of negotiations resulted in the man surrendering himself to police after midday.

The man is now in Middlemore Hospital in stable condition.

Police are still looking for a vehicle, from which the man fled this morning.
