Police are continuing to investigate the fatal head on collision on State Highway One on the Kapiti Coast.

79-year-old Te Rauoriwa Daphne Pomare died in hospital following the crash near Paekakariki on Sunday.

Wellington District Road Policing Manager Inspector Mike Wright says it's nothing to do with the roads.

"At least two of the accidents have been a result of fatigue and at least one has been the result of poor driver behaviour."

"What I can say is that from what we know at this stage is that it's nothing to do with the road, and it seems as though it's related to driver behaviour."

Mr Wright said they had extra staff on the road specially for the long weekend.

"That's been the way it has been. Both on Friday for those good folk leaving town for the holiday. There's also extra staff on the road for the return journey."

Kapiti Mayor K Gurunathan said the road is too unreliable at the moment, people aren't confident they can make it to their destinations on time.

"If you know that you can get to a destination in a particular time, I think your driving will be much more cautious. The other factor of course is that you have an alternative route. These are the sort of things that in the long term, will give you a safer outcome."

Mr Gurunathan said drivers need to take care.

"It's common sense, drive carefully and be safe."

The Chamber of Commerce agrees the four laned Transmission Gully motorway improve the safety of State Highway One.
