Searchers from Tauranga, Taihape and Whanganui have assisted with the search in Tongariro National Park.

A fifth day of searching is beginning for two men lost in Tongariro National Park.

Clothing and several items believed to belong to the pair, have helped police narrow down the search area to three square kilometres.

The number of searchers has grown since Sunday, with some travelling from around the central North Island.

About a dozen army personnel have joined the search, and bad weather prevents the use of a helicopter.

Police say hope of finding the men alive is fading.
