A plane has crashed on to a major South Auckland road this afternoon.
A police spokesman said the small aircraft had come down on Runciman Rd at Pukekohe.
Miraculously the pilot has escaped with moderate injuries.
The fire service is laying foam on the road as fuel is leaking from the aircraft.
The crash is blocking a lane and causing major traffic problems in the area, the police spokesman said.
Only one person was inside the plane when it ran into difficulties mid-air.
A Fire Service spokesman said the plane was on its roof and was leaking fuel into a nearby drain.
Paramedics were at the scene treating the plane's pilot for moderate injuries.
The accident happened just after 2.10pm.
The plane had come to a halt upside down near the intersection of Runciman Rd and Rutherford Rd.
Three fire crews are currently at the scene.
Police were now directing building traffic around the wreckage.
