A male surfer has drowned at a South Auckland beach, despite the heroic efforts of Surf Lifesavers, paramedics and a doctor.
NZME. says the man was seen waving for help at Kariaotahi Beach this afternoon, and a member of the public brought him to shore and began CPR.
Another person rushed to the surf club for help, and senior lifeguards used defibrillators and oxygen until St John paramedics arrived.
A Westpac Rescue Helicopter also responded with a medic on board.
Despite efforts which lasted over an hour he could not be resuscitated.
The man had been surfing about a kilometre north of the surf club and flagged area.
The drowning is the second in two days after a 25-year-old man died off Northland's Uretiti Beach yesterday.
