The Serious Crash Unit is investigating a fatal Police pursuit in South Auckland.

Counties Manukau Police say a Honda was seen doing a burnout on Mangere Road in Mangere East at 3am.

They say officers signalled for it to stop, but it fled at high speed along that road.

Police followed the vehicle for a short distance but lost sight of it just before Gray Ave.

It was found shortly after at the intersection of Mangere and Walmsley roads, where it had crashed into a building.

The male passenger died at the scene from his injuries.

The driver was taken to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition.

The accident will be reported to the IPCA.

Diversions are in place and the intersection's expected to be closed until lunchtime.
