The New Zealand Education Institute is backing calls for long term direction in our education system.
An Education Hui to develop a strategic plan for the sector for the next 30 years has been suggested by New Zealand First.
NZEI President Lynda Stuart says the issue of education has been used as a political football for years now, a pattern which has resulted in little progress being made.
"For quite some time we have wanted and needed a shared vision of where we want to head and what's best for our children," she said.
"It's time that our parents and our educators were listened to because we are the experts around children's learning."
