UPDATED 7.29PM A man has died at the scene of a major crash north of Te Puke.

Firefighters at the scene confirmed a man has been killed in the two-car collision. The man had been trapped in the car he had been travelling in and firefighters were working to free free him from the wreck when he died.

Police have re-opened Te Puke Highway after it was closed for nearly three hours.

Acting Senior Sergeant Cam Anderson said the victim was a 20-year-old man.

Mr Anderson said a third vehicle was also involved, having clipped one of the vehicles.

Te Puke station officer Keith Merritt said a woman also involved in the crash had been taken to Tauranga Hospital.

She was understood to be in a serious-stable condition.

Emergency services were called to the head-on collision, near Black Stump Berries, at 2.28pm.

Te Puke Highway, a busy arterial route between the township and Tauranga, was shut down to all traffic at multiple cordons. Police opened it again at 5.02pm.
