UPDATED 6.04PM: Southern police are trying to identify the victims in the light plane which crashed near Wanaka this afternoon, leaving no survivors.
The crash was spotted by a helicopter pilot - near the northern branch of the Motatapu River just before 2-pm today.
It's believed three or four victims were in the plane but police haven't confirmed who they are.
Otago Lakes area commander, Inspector Olaf Jensen says they hope to recover the bodies by nightfall.
He says the plane hadn't been reported missing and they're trying to find out where it came from.
