A woman has been killed in Opotiki in Eastern Bay of Plenty, in what's believed to have been a domestic incident.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen says Police were called to a residential property near the CBD at around 1.15 this afternoon, where they found the body of a woman.

He says it appears the woman sustained serious injuries to her face and arms.

A homicide investigation has begun, and the identity of the woman is not yet formally confirmed.
