UPDATED: 10.04am Every available firefighter's been called to Kaimarama in the Coromandel, as a massive blaze keeps raging.

An entire road has been evacuated  and six homes have been destroyed with nothing left.

Fire crews from all over the peninsula have been battling to contain the fire fanned by strong winds and dry conditions, since last night.

Fire Service shift manager Colin Underdown said about eight hectares of scrub has been burnt ... and it's not over yet.

Thames Valley Rural Fire Authority principal officer Paul Shaw said they had to pull crews out once it got dark because it was too dangerous.

He said heavy machinery is being sent in this morning to cut fire breaks around the homes to protect them.

"The helicopters working on now containing the fire completely within a perimeter, and once its contained within that perimeter we'll work on widening the perimeter so it has no chance of escaping."

Rebekah Duffin from the Thames Coromandel District Council said the entire small peninsula, just south of Whitianga, has been burned to the water's edge.

"We'd love for it to just go for a couple of hours and then be put out, but it looks like we're in for the long haul. I don't want to make any estimates on how long that long haul will be, but it's a pretty significant fire."

Duffin said local residents have been incredible, caring for those who have lost everything.

"The people from the Wilderland's property which was destroyed in the fire are at Riverglen campsite and are being looked after and fed by local residents, which is fantastic."
