A light plane crashed on take-off at Queenstown Airport this morning.

Four people were on the Cessna 177b plane, including the pilot.

One has been taken to hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Airport communications manager Jen Andrews said all flights were on hold.

"The airport's emergency response plan was immediately activated and Rescue Fire service is at the scene and the ambulance is on its way."

"Inbound flights have been diverted while the police undertake an assessment of the scene and the aircraft is removed from the airfield," the airport said.

"The airport's Emergency Operations Centre has been activated and the team is working closely with all agencies involved to manage the response, flight delays and any impacts on the airfield."

The Civil Aviation Authority has been notified

Details of the operator were not available.

Police said the crash happened at 8.51am.
