A father and son have been rescued from Omanawa Falls, south of Tauranga, after falling 100 metres off a walking track.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue helicopter says the 12-year-old boy fell first, and his father had been trying to rescue him when he was hurt.

The 37-year-old man has serious back and shoulder injuries, while his son has serious head injuries.

They were winched to safety and flown to Tauranga Hospital.
