A 37 year-old hunter missing in the Coromandel State Forest Park has walked out of the bush a short distance from where he went in.

He has spoken with police and they say he's safe and well.

Extra teams had joined the search for the hunter, who went out looking for pig dogs in the Wire Road area near Hikutaia on Thursday morning.

That search found nothing, so he went back yesterday - and hadn't been seen again until he walked out this evening.

He was well-dressed for the conditions and confident in the bush.
