A number of residents are being evacuated following a chemical spill in Mt Maunganui.

Police have been called out to Mark Road, following reports of an ammonia leak at a property there.

Cordons are in place on Hull Road to Tukorako Drive and Totara Street, and on Triton Avenue and side streets.

People are being asked to leave the area as quickly as possible.

A Police spokesperson says the spill could take several hours to clean up.
