Death in Dunedin after fires overnight

A person has died in a fire in Dunedin.

Crews were called to Nutsford Street in Brockville around midnight.

They found a unit in a block of four owned by Housing New Zealand, well alight.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Andrew Norris said the only occupant of the unit died inside.

He said as a result of that there will be an investigator working with Police on site today to determine the cause of the fire.

The other units in the block have been evacuated because of smoke.

Meanwhile firefighters in Auckland have dealt with a fire in a garage being used as a sleepout, in Mt Roskill.

The 111 call to May Road came at just before 5am.

Everyone made it out safely, and one crew is finishing off at the scene.
