An eight-year-boy has been killed after following his dad across the road after their ute broke down, near Tirau.
The father had crossed State Highway 5 to get some water for the vehicle's radiator.
Police say the boy was struck by a Toyota Corolla when he decided to follow him.
The driver of that car wasn't injured.
An investigation is underway.
