UPDATED 2.50PM: Police have confirmed they've found the bodies of two missing French Canadian tourists.

Te Anau police found a second body near where they found the first in the Fiordland National Park yesterday.

Sergeant Ian Martin said the body was found in a similar location to the first, in an area between the Hanging Valley Hut and the Iris Burn Hut.

23-year-olds Vincent Lessard and Etienne Lemieux were last seen in Queenstown at the beginning of the month.

Both were found near avalanche debris.

Both Mr Lessard and Mr Lemieux's families have been advised of the discoveries and police are working with the Canadian High Commission, as well as authorities in Canada.

The deaths are being seen as evidence New Zealand's wilderness offers up unique challenges.

Federated Mountain Clubs president Robin McNeil said our landscape and climate is very different to what is found around the world.

"I've met Canadians, and they've said they've had minus 20 degrees, but it's an actual fact that plus four with rain can be more dangerous to trampers than minus 20 if you stay dry."

Robin McNeil hopes tragedies like this don't put other trampers off.
