A warning has been issued to avoid backcountry travel due to the risk of avalanches.
The NZ Avalanche Advisory says heading to areas outside of ski field boundaries is not advised, due to the recent stormy weather.
Arthur's Pass, Craigieburn, Aoraki/Mt Cook and Ohau are all listed as no go areas due to significant danger.
Only those with expert avalanche skills should consider entering the other eight mountain regions.
In a statement, the NZ Avalanche Advisory said hazards are not managed in the backcountry, and with conditions at expert or above, now is not a time for inexperienced people to be in these areas.Â
