A collision between an ambulance and a car has turned heads at the intersection of Druces and Wiri Station Roads in Auckland.

A St John's spokesperson says the ambulance was heading to an emergency this morning, with lights flashing, when the crash happened.

The ambulance ended up on its side with the windscreen smashed, but no one was injured in either vehicle.

A second ambulance took over the original call-out, and the patient was safely taken to Middlemore Hospital.

Police and the Serious Crash Unit are investigating.
