Waikato police are waiting for toxicology reports as the look into a series of events that ended with the death of a 24-year-old pedestrian near Matamata.

The foreign national, who had been in New Zealand for about eight months, was struck by a car on State Highway 27 on Saturday night.

His car was found in a ditch on the highway and police believe he was walking to the farm where he lived when he was struck from behind.

Police were called but the man died at the scene.

While the driver returned a negative breath test, police say are still waiting on toxicology reports for the dead man.
