A 13-year-old girl has been flown to hospital after being thrown from a quad bike as it plummeted 60 metres into a North Island stream.

A helicopter was called to rescue the teen after the quad bike had come off a farm track and plummeted into a stream nearMangaweka on Wednesday afternoon.

She had suffered numerous injuries to her chest, back and pelvis. She was treated at the scene and flown to Whanganui Hospital.

Philips Search and Rescue Trust said the vehicle had gone off the track, falling into the stream below, with the girl thrown out into bush halfway down.

The girl was "thrown from the vehicle halfway down into the bush," a helicopter spokesperson said.

Emergency services used a personal locator beacon to find the girl.

The rescue helicopter hoisted a police search and rescue officer to her and with the help of two people who were with the girl, they were able to get her to a position where the chopper could hoist her out.
