A driver going over 100km in a 50km zone said he was speeding home because he needed to go to the toilet.

Waikato Police said "his excuse stinks" and gave him and immediate 28 day licence suspension and a day in court.

The man was pinged going 114km in a 50km zone on a dark and wet residential street.

"This occurred tonight on a busy Rototuna residential street, the particular area is very popular for evening walkers, runners with children, as well being a high density traffic area," Waikato Police said in a Facebook post.

"It was extremely disappointing to see this manner of driving, and to think of the potentially serious consequences/road trauma it may have caused had this person not been stopped."

"There is absolutely no excuse for speeding."
