Yoga could help Kiwi kids concentrate in class

Yoga is being introduced into Fijian schools, and New Zealand schools are now being encouraged to follow suit.

International Hindu leader Rajan Zed has applauded the Fiji Ministry of Education for making it part of the country's physical education curriculum.

The US cleric said all New Zealand schools should be considering introducing yoga as a way of helping children focus and relax.

Auckland psychologist and yoga instructor Edit Horvath teaches specialist lessons for children, and says yoga has benefits for kids which parents might want to consider.

"To learn how to be still and how to think, focus, to really shut out all the noise of the world."

Horvath said children's yoga is quite different to adult's yoga, and often includes dress-up and storylines.

"There are tricks of the trade. Have fun with it, have movement with it, have a little story with what we are doing."
