Teachers are turning out for marches and events around the country to call for better funding of education.

The rallies, which include a march down Queen Street in Auckland, are timed to co-incide with World Educators Day on Saturday.

"This World Educators Day we are calling for the government to end its freeze on school operational funding and early childhood education funding and to ditch its proposal for bulk funding," said NZEI president Louise Green, who'll be speaking at the event in Wellington.

She said the government's radical funding proposals will lead to bigger class sizes, fewer teachers and less money for public education.

"This is why teachers and support staff have resoundingly rejected its bulk funding plans," Ms Green said.

Education Minister Hekia Parata said in a speech earlier this month that the government had a strong record of investing in education with a 35 per cent overall increase since National came into government.

Overall, $11 billion is spent on education each year.

"The problem we are solving with the funding review is that we currently have a very poor line of sight to the money going in and the outcomes coming out. So we need it to be better," she said.

She said she will go to cabinet in November to determine which proposals within the funding review will go forward, with a view to implement the changes in 2020.
