Reading big books to schoolchildren while also sounding out the words, is being labelled a "breakthrough" to improving literacy.
Newly published research from Massey and Auckland Universities has found six-year-olds who were read the big books with enlarged words and were taught phonics by singling out words in the stories, achieved astonishing results.
It brought their reading up to an average level within 12 weeks.
