Hundreds of students can now get a Waikato degree without setting foot on the Hamilton campus.

Students can get a New Zealand university degree in China for the first time, thanks to a new partnership.

The University of Waikato has teamed up with Zhejiang University City College to offer courses in media technologies, graphic design and business.

230 undergraduates have commenced studies, but funding is available to take on almost a thousand people.

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor, Alister Jones, says the programme allows students to study closer to their families.

"The students are able to stay in China, they're able to undertake a full New Zealand degree program in China and they graduate with a degree from a New Zealand university."

Jones, said it's a coup for New Zealand education:

"We're taking our world class degrees out to an international market offshore. Many other universities around the world have done that and this is the first time [for] a New Zealand university, taking our degrees into China."
