The preschool sector says the Government can't afford to wait any longer to increase funding for young children with special needs.

The Government has announced it plans to increase spending on special needs education for children under five.

That's being welcomed by the Early Childhood Council, which says the current lack of funding is putting teachers and other children at risk.

Chief executive Peter Reynolds said he's tired of receiving calls from kindergarten or preschool managers who are in tears trying to deal with high-needs children.

"They've just come back from the emergency department of the local hospital having to take a teacher in there because of serious bite injuries or bruises as a result of a child who's thrown an uncontrollable tantrum."

Reynolds says it will give under fives with special needs some of the same support services over fives currently receive.

"It means that by the time some of those kiddies reach school they're not the problem that they might be right now."

Reynolds said the early childhood currently receiving just five percent of special needs funding, and all teachers and children will benefit from the extra resources.
