Scammed Indian students to protest again

UPDATED 11.33AM: Auckland's Diwali Festival is the latest venue for a protest by supporters of Indian students upset about plans to deport them.

Dozens of Indian students face deportations because fraudulent financial documents were submitted to Immigration NZ on their behalf by agents.

They want to be allowed to stay and complete their education.

Their backers say 150 are affected, but Immigration New Zealand says the number is just 39.

There have been a number of protests on behalf of the students, and on Saturday supporters will be at the Diwali Festival at Aotea Square between 2pm and 4pm.

They will demand the withdrawal of the deportation orders.

Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce has said the students had to be responsible for paperwork submitted on their behalf.

"Let us all unite and tell this government and its MPs that they and their dark policies are not welcome at a festival representing light. Let us also demand justice for the Indian students," organisers say.
