The government has set up a ministerial youth advisory group, meeting a campaign promise to give college students a voice and influence within the education sector.

Education Minister Chris Hipkins has named 12 students for his Ministerial Youth Advisory Group, choosing them from colleges across the country.

"I want our young people to have a say in the way our education system works," he said on Friday.

"I expect this diverse group of young people will bring fresh perspectives and valuable insights about education."

The group's first meeting will be held in February and its members will decide what they want to talk about.

Travel and accommodation costs will be covered, and Mr Hipkins will attend the meetings.
