March to save Christchurch school

Families of a threatened Christchurch primary school are lacing up their walking shoes to send a message to the government.

Around 400 people are expected to Walk for Red Cliffs this morning, to show the community support for keeping Red Cliffs Primary open.

The Education Minister is undertaking consultation on closing the school, over long term safety concerns about rock fall from the cliffs above.

But Principal Kim Alexander believes the walk will show the closure is against the community's wishes.

"It's just a way of showing that they want to have a school that their children can walk to whereas if Redcliffe school was to close there is no way most of them would be able to."

Alexander contends the march shows just how much support the school has.

"Judging by the number of submissions that have already been sent in to the minister...[it's] an indication that there's a lot of strong feeling in the wider community that they really want their school."

The walk begins at 10:30am this morning.
