Indian students facing deportation incensed by govt inaction

LISTEN ABOVE: Protest organiser Anu Kaloti says students had no knowledge of fraudulent documents and should not lose out on tuition fees they've paid.

A protest will be held outside an Auckland public meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Bill English tonight, over Indian students facing deportation.

They've been caught up in a fraudulent visa scam, after paying thousands to a dodgy outfit in India.

Migrant Workers Association organiser Anu Kaloti said the students' supporters also continue to seek an appointment with the Immigration Minister, but have made no progress so far.

"We are disappointed that they're not willing to help people on a case-by-case basis, but they are very quick to hand out a collective blanket punishment."

Kaloti said that's not New Zealand justice.

The students are particularly incensed at the failure of several National MPs of Indian ethnic origin, who have been conspicuously silent on the issue, said Kaloti.

"The students had, in their own right, been in contact with National MPs of Indian descent and they had no response. I think they didn't even get an acknowledgement."

The students said they had no idea fake documents were used by India-based agents - and claim deporting them for something they haven't done is unfair.

Labour leader Andrew Little said there's a clear solution which the Government should use.

"They should be given an amnesty to allow them to finish their course before they go back to India, and if any are deported without finishing their course then actually the institutions should be required to refund their fees."
