Education national standards are no more.

The government has scrapped the education comparisons saying parents have lost confidence in their narrow scope.

The decision was part of Labour's election campaign policy and will come into force next year.

"Parents will still receive reports at least twice a year on their child's progress and achievement in maths, reading and writing as well as across the curriculum areas," Education Minister Chris Hipkins said on Tuesday.

"But this reporting will focus on children's progress, rather than measuring them against arbitrary National Standards."

A new approach for understanding school curriculums will be developed through next year and Mr Hipkins said he'll report back to cabinet on its progress in September.
