The Minister of Education says the fate of a Northland charter school is likely to be known in the next few weeks.

In February, Hekia Parata issued Te Kura Houra Ki Whangaruru a final warning after the Education Review Office highlighted problems of poor attendance, bullying, drug use and management infighting.

A special audit was done a month later, which the Minister has received.

In a select committee meeting last month, Hekia Parata declined to give an indication of a specific time-frame to determine the fate of the school.

But she's told Newstalk ZB she's since met with the school's new trust and is close to reaching a decision.

Parata is also in Whangarei today speaking with educators, business people and regional leaders.

She is speaking at the Tai Tokerau cross sector forum, held at Toll Stadium about how the groups could work together to improve Northland's currently poor education standards.

She said it's important that what is being taught in Northland schools is relevant to the economic opportunities in the region.

"In maths and science and literacy, using farming examples or forestry examples so that kids who come from those communities can see the relevance of what they're learning."

She also believes that using these relevant examples in the classroom will give the opportunity for the children to be employed in these sectors when they leave school.
