An interim decision will be made this afternoon over the future of Redcliffs School in Christchurch.

The Education Minister's been considering closing the school for months, believing future rockfall events from the cliffs behind the school pose a continuing risk.

The issue's attracted huge public consultation and submissions, with the school given an extra two months to prepare its case.

Principal Kim Alexander said Hekia Parata will meet with the school's board today.

"There is at least 28 days for the board to respond to her before she makes a final decision. Our response would depend on what her interim decision is today."

She said most people in the area have been fighting this since the beginning.

"The Redcliffs community and the school board have made it very clear that we are hoping that today's announcement will be that the Redcliffs school will remain open."

Labour's Ruth Dyson believes there's only one right answer.

"I'm personally hoping that the Minister has considered the submissions, which were overwhelmingly in favour of the school returning home and that she confirms that today. I'm really hanging out for that."

The school board will then have a month to respond to the interim decision.
