Public discussion is being encouraged around Treasury's suggestion to vary the starting time of schools and universities to reduce traffic congestion.
Treasury Secretary Gabriel Makhlouf says it could free up capital investment spent on roads to be used elsewhere.
Auckland Primary Principals Association president Frances Nelson says it's about day to day lives of children, and patterns families have around children and work.
She says it's a conversation that's bigger than just what schools or Treasury would like, but the idea is worthy of further consideration.
"I don't think it should be driven by treasury and I don't think it should just be underpinned by the financial constraints or the costing to treasury...through infrastructure and roading. It's a broader conversation than that."Â
Nelson sis unsure and would not like to say how the initiative would work.
