A school in the Bay of Plenty that contested its decile rating, now has the funding it believes it needs.

Pukehina School was decile Three last year, then after a nationwide review was put up to a Decile Five.

Principal Roger Reid reports after contesting the rating, the school was re-graded to gecile One.

As a result, its funding quadrupled to more than $900 for each of its 14 pupils.

He believes the system's supposed to take into account the socio-economic status of the school's pupils, but it's flawed.

"It's a system that I really don't believe is working, but in saying that at this point in time there hasn't been a system that's actually going to work."

Read told Newstalk ZB now the school is now able to get a bus so their kids can get to and from school and go on school trips.

"It means that we can buy better resources, we can buy computers, we can go on camp, we can do education outside the classroom - all of those activities."
