Christchurch police are searching for two people, after a vicious and unprovoked attack on a deaf teenager.

The 14-year-old student at Sumner's Van Asch College was playing in the grounds with friends when he was approached by two males around 7.30 on Saturday night.

They initially walked off after realising he was deaf but then ran at him - one punched him in the face and kicked him in the thigh - the victim needed medical attention.

Senior Constable Danelle Asher says police have little information and want anyone who saw the attack to come forward.

"From what we understand both of the males were teenagers, and Pakeha of slim build. They were drinking somewhere nearby."

Danelle Asher says they want to help the boy move forward.

"It's all come as a shock, it was quite unexpected. Nothing provoked or anything like that. It was a one off incident targeting a vulnerable victim."
