A 15-year-old driver of a stolen car fleeing police in south Auckland early Monday morning has died after hitting a tree.

Police say they tried to stop the stolen vehicle, in Otara, but within a minute from fleeing police, the teen hit a tree.

The teen, Morocco Tai, died at the scene, while two women trapped in the wreckage have been taken to Middlemore Hospital, one seriously hurt.

Police confirmed that Tai was also involved in a pursuit on September 22, where he was the passenger in a stolen vehicle, which drove the wrong way down the Southern Motorway.

Tai was charged with aggravated robbery, endangering transport and aiding a driver in a dangerous matter, at the time.

Inspector Dave Simpson says this type of behaviour has to stop.

"An outcome like (Monday) is the last thing police want to see, we now have a family who have lost a son and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time," Simpson said.

"These incidents are also devastating for the officers involved. They are being supported with welfare and by their colleagues."

The matter has been referred to the IPCA and police are conducting their own investigation.
