A talented sportsman who received a scholarship for a top Hawke's Bay secondary school has been sentenced for his part in a brutal attack in Havelock North.

Jacob Broderick has received four months community detention and 200 hours community work, as well as nine months supervision.

He appeared at the Hastings District Court today after pleading guilty in January to injuring with intent to injure.

The 18 year old took part in an unprovoked attack on a 32 year old electrician outside the clock tower public toilets on Te Aute Road in the early hours of August 3 last year.

The victim was kicked and punched about the head, leaving him unresponsive, bleeding and severely bruised and swollen.

He spent five days in Hawke's Bay Hospital, with part of that in an induced coma.

Broderick kicked the man once in the head, then bragged about it afterwards with his co-accused when they went to the Havelock North McDonald's after the attack.

His lawyer Tony Snell told the court he is a talented sportsperson who went to Hastings Boy High School on a sports scholarship.

Mr Snell says he deeply regrets and is ashamed of his actions.

His co-offender got two-and-a-half years jail for repeatedly punching the victim's head.

Ben Simmons says his friend can't believe the difference in the sentences for both attackers.

"Total dismay," he said. "Unbelief."

"He was obviously hoping for a close sentence to the prior one because in his mind, he considers it all part of the same action."
