UPDATED 1.14pm: A 43-year-old man has been left with life-threatening injuries, including a punctured lung, after being repeatedly stabbed during an altercation between a small group of people on Bush Street in Paeroa last night.

He's in a serious but stable condition in Waikato Hospital. 

A 28-year-old man appeared in Hamilton District Court this morning, charged with wounds with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police say they were called to the scene about 11pm and arrested the suspect not long after. 

He's been remanded in custody and is due to reappear on Tuesday.
