A greyhound live-baiting investigation's been sparked after pictures appearing to show one of New Zealand's top greyhound trainers stringing up live animals.

The SPCA is looking into trainer Brendon Cole after the allegations of live-baiting.

Photos appearing to show Cole stringing up a live animal on the race track prompted the investigation.

CEO Andrea Midgen said the practice, believed to make the dogs run faster, is outlawed in New Zealand.

"We started the investigation with images that are not crystal clear, which was enough cause for concern and hence the investigation is underway."

Widespread live-baiting in Australia nearly toppled the country's greyhound racing business just three years ago.

The SPAC said that this type of investigation is very uncommon, and it seems to be an isolated event.

"Most trainers are wanting to abide by the law and do the right thing, so most trainers would not even contemplate live baiting," Midgen said.

Brendon Cole could not be reached for comment on the allegations.
